27th February 2010   Annual Dinner

The Choir's Annual Dinner was held at Manor Park, Clydach again this year and it was good to see so many friends and supporters there to join us in the festivities.

Among those on the "top table" we were pleased to welcome our Patron Hywel Evans, Vice President Hywel Lewis, the Rev. Eirian Wyn, and our President Huw Tregelles Williams, Huw Tregelles.jpg (75122 bytes)who spoke after the dinner with anecdotes of conductors, performers, and characters he had come across during his time with the BBC. Not quite a "kiss and tell" tabloid exposé, but very amusing and informative.

We were entertained by Kate Harwood, the promising local young soprano who sang a selection of Welsh songs, and ended with one from the musical "Hairspray", which is coming to Penyrheol Theatre, Gorseinon soon. Kate was accompanied by her mother. Kate Harwood.jpg (65418 bytes)

As usual on these occasions a lot of work went on behind the scenes to make the evening a success, and we would like to thank all those involved for their efforts, especially Marilyn Evans who arranged the seating plan and managed to sort out everyone's choice of menu.

Saturday 19th December 2009

We will include occasional reports here of choristers' interests and hobbies outside the Choir.

Our first subject is Bottom Bass John Fry, who today led his 25th Annual Gower Society/ W Glam Ramblers Christmas walk around Carn Goch, near Bethlehem, Carms. Carn Goch is the site of two of the oldest Bronze and Iron Age stone forts in Wales, and Gaer Fawr is certainly one of the largest. They overlook the Towy valley and the Carmarthen Fans in the distance, and the weather, although very cold, could not have been better to enjoy the views.  The frost had hardened the previously muddy parts of the walk, so most people made it back with relatively clean clothes to the Cennen Arms in Trapp for a meal and a carol-singing session. This went well, but would have been even better with reinforcements from the Choir!

John leads the singing of a carol in Farmer Williams' yard before gaining access to his land at Tan y Lan farm.

John claims this is the last time he will lead the walk but the regular walkers are hoping he will have a change of heart next December. In recognition of his 25 years' service he was presented with an album of photographs from this walk in recent years.

As well as being a staunch member of the Choir, his main interest is ornithology, but that story will have to wait for another day.

Christmas Buffet

The Choir would like to thank the staff of the Grove Club in Morriston, who put on an excellent spread for this evening's get-together. If only the singing afterwards had been as tasty! In spite of Helen's best efforts at the organ the length of the lounge resulted in what sounded, at times, like two choirs separated by at least half a second! Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable evening on which to end this year's practices.

Monday 7th December 2009 - CHEQUE PRESENTATION

Following our joint concert with Swansea Excelsior Ladies Choir at Saint Catherine's Church, Gorseinon on 16th October, cheques were presented to the chosen causes - St Catherine's organ restoration fund, and Ty Olwen Trust, who support the work of Ty Olwen Palliative Care by providing extra comforts and amenities not normally provided by the health authority. Each benefitted to the tune of £420.

7th December 2009 - November proved to be a difficult month for the Choir. Just three weeks after being injured on the escalator in St David's Hall, ROY SEABORNE is mourning the sudden death of his brother, ALUN.  ALUN was a long-standing member of the Choir and although in his ninetieth year was still regularly attending practices. Our sympathies go to his wife Betty and the rest of his family. His funeral was held today at Morriston crematorium.
19/11/09 - It was with much sadness that we learned of the passing of one of the Choir's most faithful and long-standing choristers - RONNIE DAVIES. Ronnie was also well known through his involvement with Bonymaen Rugby Club. We were privileged to sing (at Ronnie's own request) at his funeral in Capel y Cwm, Bonymaen today, when many tributes were paid to him as his active life was remembered.

11/11/09  WHO'S WHO UPDATES

SEIRIOL EVANS was elected CHAIRMAN at the Choir's A.G.M.

HUW ROBERTS has taken on the rÔle of PATRONS' Secretary following the retirement of BERNARD BOND.

ROBERT HARWOOD  was unanimously elected to the position of Vice Chairman at the Committee meeting on Tuesday 11th November.

Baritone Roy Seaborne, who was injured and taken to the Heath Hospital following an accident on the escalator at St David's Hall after the Annual Festival of Remembrance on Saturday 31st October is now home at last. Battered, bruised, and sore, and apparently striped like an escalator step!

4/11/09:  Musical Director, D. Huw Rees, welcomes our newly appointed Deputy Accompanist Rhiannon Pritchard to her first choir practice session.

30/10/09:  The  Ladies Section of the Choir surround Chairman, Seiriol Evans, as Chairlady Linda Harwood, and Treasurer Sandra Baker hand him a large cheque, proceeds of their latest fund-raising events. Our sincere thanks go to these ladies, without whose sterling efforts our own charitable appearances would be curtailed.

21/10/09:   The Choir would like to thank Bernard Bond most sincerely for many years loyal and devoted service as Patrons' Secretary.  Bernard was also the first Secretary and Treasurer of the Choir, and his will be a hard act to follow. Fortunately we have the right man for the job in Huw Roberts, a former Chairman of the Choir, and we hope that even more of our followers will add their names to the ever growing list of Patrons. Their contribution is most valuable to the Choir, as it helps us to continue providing our services free to aid fund raising for the many institutions we support through our concerts. Please go to the Patrons page for details.

21/10/09:  Regular visitors to this website may have noticed a few changes. Sadly, we have lost the services of our webmaster for many years, Byron Hubball. Byron set up this site and it is continuing along the lines set up by him, but evolving gently rather than changing drastically. We thank Byron for his hard work over the years - and it IS hard work trying to get artistes together for photos, sing in a concert, and then pull it all together with a resumé of the event. Byron, we miss you and wish you well.
